Beyond NEET: The Ultimate Medical & Science Blueprint
As a PCB student, society has a single message for you – Pass NEET or fail, join the path of being an MBBS doctor. This is a great fallacy. The healthcare and pure science field in India is enormous, lucrative and varied.
This guide is intended to be your own personal career counsellor. We will explore in detail what career best fits your interests, review each major entrance exam and help you navigate the complex counseling process.
What's the best way for me to proceed? (Clinical vs. Research)
Don't select a degree simply for its prestige. What do you really want to do each and every day?
- I want to work with patients face to face. It's time you joined the ranks of Clinical Healthcare. They can take up at least MBBS (Allopathic Doctor), BDS (Dentist), BVSc (Veterinarian), Nursing or Physiotherapy (BPT).
- I want to find the cure, don't just give it to people. You should be in Pure Science & Research. It can be Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or pure Physics/Chemistry (B.Sc / BS-MS degrees).
- I want to concentrate on holistic and traditional medicine. Try the AYUSH courses such as BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), or BUMS (Unani).

NEET is not the only exam to be taken. See the big picture:
| Exam Name | What it unlocks | Difficulty | Target Institutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEET UG | MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, BVSc, some Nursing | Extremely High | AIIMS, JIPMER, Govt/Private Medical Colleges |
| Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Aptitude Test (IAT) | BS-MS Dual Degree in Pure Sciences | High (Focus on deep concepts) | Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISERs) across India and some seats at IISc Bangalore |
| NEST | Integrated M.Sc (Biology/ Chemistry/ Physics) | High | NISER Bhubaneswar / UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai |
| CUET UG | B.B.Tech, Biotechnology, Microbiology | Moderate | Central Universities (Delhi Univ, BHU, etc.) |
| ICAR AIEEA | B.Sc Agriculture, Allied Sciences | Moderate | Agricultural Universities throughout the country |
3. Eligibility and The Age Rule
Don't be eliminated because of rumors. Here are the facts:
- NEET Age Limit: The upper age limit for NEET UG has been removed by the NMC. You need only be 17 by Dec 31st of the school year to which you are applying.
- Subject requirements: NEET, PCB and English is compulsory. But in case of pure science exams such as IAT or NEST, student can apply with either PCM or PCB (may have to attempt math sections).
- Minimum Marks: Usually 50% aggregate in PCB for general category in Class 12 boards for NEET.
There is an inherent conflict between the desire to inform and the need to inspire. There is a tension between informing and inspiring.
High marks are not guaranteed admission in medical school if a candidate fails to follow the steps in the counselling process.
- MCC Counseling (15% All India Quota): The Medical Counselling Committee is responsible for 15% government seats across the country and 100% of the Deemed University/AIIMS seats.
- State Counselling (85% State Quota): It is a special counselling provided by your home state for 85% of medical seats allotted by the state and 100% of the medical seats allotted by the private colleges in your state. You must apply for this separately!
- Govt vs Private: Government college fee is ₹10k - ₹1 Lakh per year. The annual fees of private colleges range from ₹10 Lakhs to ₹25 Lakhs. Deemed universities could go up to ₹1 Crore for entire course. Before filling the choices, be extremely conscious of your budget.
6. Additional Career Support & Resources
The journey of Clinical Careers (MBBS/BDS) is long and arduous. The starting salary of an MBBS graduate is ₹50k-₹1 Lakh/month, which varies from state to state. The actual financial leap occurs after completing a specialization (MD/MS), when the consultants can easily generate a monthly income of ₹2 Lakhs or even build up a rich and lucrative private practice.
Pure Science & Research (IISER/NISER): Many opportunities for fully funded PhD are available in the pure sciences at leading international universities (Ivy League, Max Planck etc.). After PhD, researchers enter into the category of scientists in ISRO, BARC, DRDO or become academics. Biotech firms also pay ₹8-15 LPA for their corporate R&D programs.
7. The Principles of Forecasting
- Drop the Years: Dropping 3-4 years for NEET with NO Plan B (such as B-Tech).If you're not in Sc or Biotech, then it is career killer.
- Discrimination in Allied Sciences: Nursing and Physiotherapy considered "inferior". In fact, the UK, Canada and the Middle East are all in dire need of specialized nurses and physios with employment prospects that fall under fast-track immigration, and pay well too.
- Security Deposit: In MCC counselling, in case you receive a seat in Round 2 and fail to appear then you will lose a huge security deposit (which can be up to ₹2 Lakhs in Deemed universities).
7. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a provision to do Biotechnology without Mathematics in the Curriculum of class 12th?
Yes. Students with PCB can enroll in B. students from many universities (through CUET or their own exam).Sc/B.Tech in Biotechnology.
Does a science career pay well?
Of course, if you aim for a PhD. The central government pays the scientists in government institutes (BARC) excellent pay scales, housing and job security.
Who oversees these occupations?
MBBS is regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC). BDS is regulated by Dental Council of India (DCI). You will need to be registered with them if you are to be a legal practitioner.
8. Final Decision Guide
- If your ultimate aspiration is to work with patients and you can take up a 10-year academic journey: Go for NEET (MBBS/BDS).
- Super fans of Biology but wish to jump into the corporate world quicker: Target CUET (Biotech Microbiology).
- If you ask a question that starts with “Why?” rather than “How?” and are interested in learning about new things: Target IAT/NEST (Pure Sciences).
