The Central University Blueprint
Central Universities are the pearls of the Indian higher educational system, in addition to the technical institutes such as IITs. The universities like Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University are equipped with world-class faculty, enormous brand value and ridiculously cheap fees.
However, admission is no longer as easy as having high marks in Class 12. This guide will give you a clear understanding of what Central Universities are, how the CUET exam has revolutionized everything and how the multi-stage counselling process works.
A central university is:
- Central vs. State: Central Universities are constituted under an act of parliament and directly funded by Ministry of Education (Government of India). State universities are funded by the State government.
- The advantage: Central Universities have much better infrastructure, much higher qualified faculty, a national level peer group, and much stronger research funding as compared to most state or private Universities.
- Affordability: Educational tuition is very heavily subsidised and can cost as little as ₹5,000 a year, ensuring that everyone, no matter their background, can access world-class education.
2. The CUET Revolution
Admission to premier institutes, such as the Delhi University was done on the basis of class 12th board marks (sometimes reaching a 100th percentile). Now, all Central Universities will be accepting admissions to UG courses on the basis of a single test, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

3. CUET Subject Mapping Trap
Here students make 90% of mistakes. It is not possible to choose any random subjects in the CUET.
- The Rule of 12th: For most universities (including DU), the course in which you have studied in class 12 is the only course you will be required to take CUET exams for. If a student from Science chooses CUET History, then his/her application will be rejected by DU.
- Language and General Test: Some universities (such as BHU or JNU) require a Language test as well as a General test for some courses and do not take your core subjects into account whatsoever.
- Action Plan: Eligibility criteria is to be read carefully from the official website of the University for the exact course/University before filling the form.
4. The Counseling Maze (CSAS & Beyond)
A good score in CUET is not a guarantee of admission to a college. CUET does not do the admission; it gives the score to the universities.
- Single Applications: Applicants need to apply through the respective counseling websites of each university they want to get admission to. An example of this is DU's Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal.
- Preference Filling: You will be provided with a list of course+college combinations and asked to rank them (e.g., B)Com Hons at SRCC #1 & Economics Hons at Hindu #2 This is a preference list that will decide your fate. If you mistakenly put a lower ranked college in front of a higher ranked college, the system will lock it in if you meet the cutoff.
5. Selecting the Appropriate University
Which one to choose between DU, BHU or JNU?
- Corporate Placements: If your aim is to go for higher finance jobs or Consulting jobs after your undergraduate, you should aim at Delhi University (North Campus colleges).
- Research & Academia: For a PhD, academia or government jobs, consider places such as JNU or Hyderabad University where it is an amazing intellectual hotspot.
- Campus Life: The University of BHU or Pondicherry University have huge, closed campuses that provide a very immersive student life as opposed to DU which is spread around a city as individual colleges.
6. Common Admission Mistakes
- Being unaware of the counselling process because of waiting for results of CUET. The portals are open and panic has set in by then.
- Only filling top colleges in the preference list. Be sure to have safe alternatives or you may find yourself without a seat.
- Failure to follow the date of the caste/certification of the category requirements. The majority of central universities accept certificates issued post a certain date usually April 1st of the year of admission in the Central Government format.
