Most of the articles simply mention NATA and JEE Paper 2 and leave you to work it out. This guide isn't like that.This guide is not at all like that. It's meant to be your personal career counselor. By the end of this reading, you should have an understanding of what architecture is, if you qualify, which exam you should take and what your actual career options are, and how counseling will work.
This is the most crucial component of the subject.This is the most fundamental part of the subject.
You should know what exam you are taking before you select it. Architecture is not ‘civil engineering’ and it is not ‘interior design’.
- The Reality of Architecture: It is the balance of art (human psychology and aesthetic) and science (physics, materials and stability). The experience of a space is designed by an architect.
- Civil Engineering vs. Architecture: An architect designs a building's appearance, interior and exterior climate and functionality. A civil engineer determines the loads to make sure that the architect's design is not going to fall down.
- You don't necessarily have to be Picasso, but you do have to be able to imagine in your head what 3-D objects look like, be aesthetically attuned, logical and extremely patient.
The Complete Architecture Admission Pathway
Becoming an architect is a very regulated process in India governed by the Council of Architecture (CoA). The way is straight:

4. Selecting the appropriate assessment.
Don't complete forms mechanically. Let's examine your situation:
- If you want SPA Delhi or NITs: You NEED to appear for JEE Main Paper 2A. Getting into NIT/SPA is not the prime objective of NATA.
- You have to pass JEE Main paper 1, followed by JEE Advanced and then AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) to get into IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur.
- If your design skills are strong but your math skills are mediocre: Do strictly NATA. The top state colleges as well as private universities such as CEPT Ahmedabad also accept NATA exams, and the maths portion of the exam is easier than the JEE.
- Take both "back up options"! The drawing and aptitude portions of the test go hand-in-hand.
5. Eligibility Without Confusion
The worst part of the exam is passing but not getting the documents right. Learn these tough CoA rules:
- In Class 12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) subjects are compulsory. Students who have taken PCB (Biology) will not be able to take up B.Arch.
- Diploma Holders: 10+3 Diploma students (any stream) are eligible as long as they learn mathematics as a compulsory subject.
- Marks Requirement: On average, 50% of aggregate in PCM and 50% of overall aggregate in Class 12 (relaxations as per reserved category).
6. Knowledge of the Entrance Tests
Why is there testing of drawing? They are not looking for fine artists. They are assessing your ability to think in 3D, which means being able to picture how light is cast on a 3D object. Are you able to grasp the concept of scale and proportion?
NATA places a strong emphasis on logical reasoning, observation (such as differences in intricate images), and architectural awareness (historical buildings and materials). There is a dedicated rigorous Mathematics section in JEE Paper 2, which involves high level of preparation in Calculus and Algebra, apart from hand drawing test.
7. Colleges After Each Exam & 8. Admission Process
The places where learning takes place:
- Delhi, Bhopal, Vijayawada, etc., JEE Paper 2: SPAs (All India) / NITs (Trichy, Calicut, etc.).
- NATA: CEPT Ahmedabad, Sir JJ College of Architecture (Mumbai), state universities and private colleges.
- AAT: Only at IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU.
NATA does NOT offer centralized national counselling, and is not the Counselling Trap. The admission to private universities is done through the NATA score individually with state counselling authorities such as MAH-CET CAP (Maharashtra) and KEA (Karnataka). In JEE paper 2, the counselling is done through a centralized counseling mechanism known as JoSAA.
9. Career Opportunities & 10. Salary Growth
Architecture is a gradual profession. Don't expect to receive a large package of IT equipment right out of college.
- The Grind: Entry-level junior architects' salaries begin at a modest range of ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per month. You're paying dues and learning how to build a building!
- The Pivot: Once reached after 3-5 years, growth becomes exponential. There are specializations available such as Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture and BIM (Building Information Modeling) the latter of which is highly paid in corporate areas.
- As an enterprise, the field of architecture is a game of Endgame. The real money is earned when you build your own company and are able to do your own design and execution projects.
11. Common Student Mistakes
- Pigheaded about the aptitude and the PCM rules: Thinking drawing is enough.
- Failure to attend state counselling deadlines: NATA will automatically allocate a college.
- Paying fees in unapproved colleges: ALWAYS check the approval of the college from the Council of Architecture (CoA) before paying fees. Otherwise your degree is worthless.

Is there any possibility for PCB (Medical) students to study Architecture?
No. Mathematics is a compulsory subject in 10+2 to be eligible for B.Arch.
Which of the following tests is easier?
NATA difficulty level is usually less than that of JEE Paper 2 in Mathematics but some of the aptitude and observation papers can be really tough.
Is coaching necessary?
