Creative & Service Careers

The Design & Hospitality Blueprint

It sounds like I want to make my career in Design, Fashion, UI / UX or Hospitality. Which entrance exam, college and career path should I choose?

If you are extremely creative, very empathic to users, or of a Born-manager / Star-servant mentality, a conventional engineer or medic path isn't the right way for you anymore. Today at a high-tech startup or at a global luxury hotel chain, UI/UX designers and Hotel Managers draw the same high-level salaries as the most talented software engineers.

So, instead of being a list of exams for you- this is gonnabeon and serve as a career discovery platform. Down to the minutest details, we will help you understand the crucial difference between NIFT, NID DAT, UCEED and NCHM JEE.

1. Mapping Your Creative Identity

Before settling on an examination, you need to really understand all the intricacies of these three fields:

  • Fashion & Textile Design / Garment designing: Designing clothes, accessories and fabrics. (Requires aesthetic perception, trends knowledge and material knowledge, Target: NIFT)
  • Industrial & Product Design: Designing physical products (cars, furniture, electronics) which look elegant and are very practical. (NID, UCEED)
  • Design of UI/UX: The golden opportunity of tech world. Designing visual interfaces and user experience of apps and websites. (Target: UCEED, NID)
  • Graphics & Animation Design: Visual communication, branding, gaming and 3D modeling. (Target: NID, Private Institutes)
  • Hospitality & Hotel Management: Business of luxury service, culinary arts, event management and tourism. Need good communication and management skills. (Target: NCHM JEE)

2. Comparison of Major Entrance Exams

NID DATNational Inst To Design (Ahmedabad,...)Product Design Animation Graphic DesignObservation, lateral thinking, drawing, portfolio (Mains)
UCEEDIIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Roorkee IIITDMJUI/UX, Industrial Design and Tech-DesignSpatial ability, logic and observation. Minimal drawing.
The NCHM JEEThe institutions of Hotel Management (IHMs) in various parts of IndiaNCHM JEE in the field of Hotel Mgmt, Culinary Arts & HospitalityNumerical ability, reasoning, English, Service Aptitude

3. The Admission Journey & Eligibility

  • Stream Neutrality: All these exams (NIFT, NID, UCEED, NCHM JEE) tend to be open to ANY stream (Science, Commerce, Arts).UCEED doesn't require Math (though Science might have an advantage in space-logical thinking).
  • The Multi-Stage Process (Design): NIFT and NID do not solely depend on written test. They have two stage process: Prelims (Written test) and Mains (Studio Test, Portfolio Review and Interview). You need to prepare a strong portfolio of your creative work.
  • Hospitality (NCHM JEE): It is a common computer based test (CBT). Centralized counseling is done after this. There is no interview or portfolio in case of IHMs.

4. Career Opportunities & Salary Expectations

UI/UX & Product Design (Tech Industry) IIT (through UCEED) and NID grads are sought after by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Zomato. Salary for UI/UX designers starting from Rs 12 Lakhs pa to Rs 25+ Lakhs pa.

Fashion & Apparel: NIFT grads usually get absorbed in retail firms(fashion brands of Aditya Birla, Reliance Brands) or small boutique design houses. Entry levels are usually in the range of 6 Lakhs- 10 Lakhs but the ultimate goal is to become an independent brand or head a luxury fashion management company.

Hospitality & Hotel Management: IHM students join the Taj, Oberoi or Marriott as MT (Management Trainee) at a salary of 4Lakhs to 6Lakhs to begin with. But fast jump to General Manager, after that luxury consulting industry, event management and international cruise lines will pay back many times.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing Design with Fine Arts: Fine Arts is for self-expression (painting, sculpture). Design is for solving a problem for a user. If all you like is drawing portraits, a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) is better than NID/NIFT.
  • Forget the Portfolio: Your portfolio is your NID identity. Do not leave your creative best until after the written exam.
  • Switching the "Glamour" to Hospitality: Managing a hotel is physically taxing and emotionally demanding in the first few years. It is not a holiday, but a management course.

6. Final Decision Guide

  • For those who simply can't get enough of digital interfaces, apps, and logical thinking (problem-solving): UCEED (IITs).
  • If you are passionate about tactile materials, aesthetics and physical creation( clothes, accessories): go for target NIFT.
  • Go for NID DAT if you're a visionary authoring to do cars, furniture, or animation.
  • If you enjoy meeting people, hosting parties and pouring exciting, good quality booze: smack NCHM JEE for IHMs.
